About
The Beginning
The year was 2016, and I was working on “NiGHTS into Webcomics” for nightsintodreams.com. As much as I was enjoying drawing these characters, the desire to create something of my own was growing. Due to my connections with NiGHTS and the vibrant designs of 90’s SEGA I knew I still wanted to draw clown based characters, I just needed to think of what on earth the STORY could be! Whilst on my way to work one day I was thinking of titles for the series as I wanted something simple and with alliteration. The name Clown Cops came about and that was it! The characters and world evolved from there! The first picture of the series was uploaded to my personal twitter later on in the year, once I had the confidence to share it!
After I had the design for Colin swirling around in my head I knew I needed another character, the funny to his straight man, the yin to his yang. I tried to draw a few designs for who would eventually become Lestera but became frustrated that none of the looks really nailed the character in my head (I wish I had kept them now though). Whilst having a tidy up of files I came across an old drawing I’d uploaded to my DeviantArt but had subsequently removed it for reasons that now escape me, from the days when I used to draw with pens. It was a picture of this jester that appeared in my dreams a few times while I was actively practicing lucid dreaming (a necessity as a NiGHTS fan haha). I knew then that I had found the base for Lestera’s design!
And so whilst drawing the rest of the NiGHTS webcomic I was planning my next project: Clown Cops! It wasn’t until later in 2017 before I could set aside time to nail the duos final designs, and these were then used as part of the first promotional poster for the series, shared online on the 1st January 2018, after I had set myself the deadline of 14th June 2018 (my birthday) as the day I would begin sharing the comic online.
The next few months on the run up to 14th June were filled by designing a further 3 promotional posters, often inspired by my (at the time) newfound love of the Universal Horror movies. The first 6 pages were uploaded to Tapas on schedule, giving us just enough pages to get a glimpse of the shoulders of our main characters and introduce Mandy and Delia.
The series has continued to update since then (with the odd big gap between pages as life gets in the way) and is now 3 full issues long! I take a long time to do each page as I’m trying to do justice to these characters and drawing them the best I can! It can look rough sometimes but hopefully you can still see the passion and love I have for these characters and this world I’m making!
As of January 2023 I finally made this dedicated site for said characters and world, a Clown Cops hub so the series is no longer just on webcomic sites like Tapas and Webtoon. It will take me a while to get the site to a standard I’m happy with but for now at least every page is readily available for old and new fans alike~!
